Avast might be good antivirus software, but some people just want to stop using it. Here’s how to fix Avast “setup is already running. Please try to start the setup later” error message, which keeps you from uninstalling it.
When you try to uninstall Avast from your computer, you get a message saying “setup is already running”. This message might confuse you since you thought you don’t run Avast, when in fact it is still running.
Avast is still running in the background, and you need to stop the process so you can uninstall Avast safely, and “setup is already running” won’t appear anymore.
Fix Avast “setup is already running”
If you wonder what process keeps you from uninstalling Avast, the process is called instup.exe. You can find that process in the Task Manager and end that process, so it doesn’t run in the background anymore.
First, open Avast. Go to its Settings > Troubleshooting page.
Uncheck the “Enable Avast self-defense module”, and then click OK.
Run the Task Manager, which can be opened by right-clicking the Taskbar.
Here, find instup.exe in the Details tab. Click it. Then click End task.
That’s it. Now try uninstalling Avast again. If this doesn’t solve your problem, do all these methods above but end with disabling Avast in the Startups tab in Task Manager, then restart your PC.
Avast provides good antivirus features, but its process might still run in the background, keeping you from removing the app. End the instup.exe process, then you can uninstall Avast.
