Windows 11 provides users a new better-looking Taskbar, but it lacks the functionality Windows 10 has: the drag and drop on the Taskbar, which is widely used to make it easy to transfer files between programs through the Taskbar.
When you drag a file to the Taskbar on Windows 11, the file icon changes and adds the block icon, as shown in the thumbnail above. When you drop the file, nothing happens.
If you experience this problem, you might be wondering whether it is a bug from Windows 11 or if you set the wrong configuration on Windows 11.
Why is drag-and-drop not working on Windows 11 Taskbar?
The drag and drop feature isn’t working because Windows 11 doesn’t have the feature (yet). You don’t experience any problem at all when you can’t drag and drop a file from one application or program to another through the Taskbar. It’s just that Windows 11 hasn’t added the complete functionality to the Taskbar.
Thankfully, you can still drag and drop files from one app to another without Taskbar by minimizing both windows. It isn’t as convenient as using the Taskbar, but it still does the job to transfer files quickly without manually browsing.
How do I fix drag-and-drop not working on the Taskbar?
The fix is simply to wait for the feature to become available on Windows 11, and the update that brings the drag-and-drop feature on the Taskbar is called 22H2. You can also do the alternative by minimizing the windows to drag and drop.
Wait until you can update to Windows 11 22H2
The only way you can drag and drop files through the Taskbar on Windows 11 is by waiting until the 22H2 update arrives. If you want the feature to become available and badly want to drag and drop through the Taskbar, you can join the Windows Insider to get the features earlier than most Windows 11 users.
Windows 11 22H2 doesn’t just bring back the drag-and-drop feature to the Taskbar. It also brings:
- Task Manager with a new user interface and user experience.
- The ability to uninstall updates from the Settings app.
- Start menu folder to group apps.
You can read more about what’s new on 22H2 on this page.
When Windows 11 22H2 will be released?
Windows 11 22H2 will be released during the fall of this year. It reaches the RTM status on May 24, 2022. It requires some time after reaching the RTM status and likely will be released to the public around September 2022.
Drag and drop from one program to another without Taskbar
Windows 11 thankfully still has the drag and drop feature that doesn’t involve Taskbar.
To drag and drop on Windows 11, minimize both apps you want to drag and drop from and to. Then, drag the file from one app directly and drop it when the cursor reaches another app.
Windows 11 lacks the drag and drop feature on the Taskbar. It isn’t available yet, but there’s a workaround that doesn’t involve the Taskbar while still practical.
