How to Change the DNS on Windows 11/10 for Fast Connection
You can get a faster internet connection by using a DNS. Here’s how to change the DNS on Windows 10 as fast as possible.
DNS is usually automatic, but you can decide to use a third-party DNS like Cloudflare’s so you can get a faster and more secure internet connection. Here’s how to change the DNS on Windows 11 and Windows 10 (and how to test your DNS connection or know whether you’re connected using the DNS).
You can set up a third-party DSN on any device. From your Android phone to your Windows 11/10 PC, changing the DNS can be done pretty easily. It works by changing your Wi-Fi properties to use a customized DNS.
Before changing the DNS, you need to know what DNS you want to use. A good DNS provides a good and safer internet connection, or consider finding one that may make your internet faster.
Personally, I use the Cloudflare DNS. This DNS helps you to browse the web without restriction, like unblocking geo-restricted websites without really slowing down your internet connection. You can also use Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 on Microsoft Edge.
Keep in mind that a DNS isn’t as secure as a VPN. DNS doesn’t hide your IP address and doesn’t encrypt your connection (depends on the DNS itself).
How to change the DNS on Windows 10 or Windows 11
Changing the DNS can be done by changing the Wi-Fi properties. Simply right-click the network icon at the Taskbar, then click the Open Network & Internet settings.
Here, click the Change adapter options button. It will open the Control Panel.
You will see your Wi-Fi connection on your Windows 11/10 PC’s Control Panel. Right-click it and select Properties.
Now, click the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and then select Properties.
You’ll see a dialog box on there. Select Use the following DNS server addresses. Then, enter the DNS server number and its alternate.
For Cloudflare’s:
Preffered: 1.1.1.1
Alternate: 1.0.0.1
Simply click OK once you’re done.
Now, select the Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6). Select Properties.
You’ll see another dialog box. Select Use the following DNS server addresses. Enter the preferred and alternate DNS server.
For Cloudflare’s:
Preferred: 2606:4700:4700::1111
Alternate: 2606:4700:4700::1001
Click OK.
You’re done. Now click OK until you can close the Control Panel.
How to check your DNS connection on Windows 11/10
Windows 11/10 provides you an easy way to check whether you’re connected using the DNS you’ve customized. To do this, you need to use the Command Prompt.
Open the Command Prompt from the Start menu or from the Windows+X menu.
On Command Prompt, simply type this line then press Enter:
nslookup
You’re going to see your DNS server address on the Address information shown on the Command Prompt, meaning you’re connected.
Using a third-party DNS server can be advantageous, either to unblock geo-restricted websites or simply to experience a faster internet connection, and Windows 11/10 provides the way pretty easily.
