To avoid some irreversible damage, you have to create a System Restore point which is basically a state of your PC before you make changes to something. If something bad happen, you can just restore to the latest restore point so you don’t lose your data.
To disable Cortana, open Registry Editor by pressing Windows+R. Type regedit, then press Enter.
Now, you will see the left sidebar. There, you go the following key in Registry Editor:
Just in case if you don’t see “Windows Search” folder, then you have to create it yourself. To create that folder, click the “Windows” folder. Right-click, and then choose New > Key.
Type Windows Search as the name.
Now, you’ll have to create a DWORD 32-bit value. This is the part that disable Cortana completely in Windows 10.
To do this, just right-click Windows Search folder, choose New > DWORD (32-bit) Value.
Now, you’ll have to name the value as AllowCortana.
To remove Cortana, you have to set the value to 0. To do that, just double-click and set 0.
That’s it. Now you’ve removed Cortana from Windows 10 and from Taskbar. But, the changes you make don’t necessarily be applied too soon. You’ve to restart your computer to see the changes.
If you want to use and enable Cortana again, you can just set the value as 1 in Registry Editor in the same value and key.

How to Remove Cortana from Windows 10 Pro & Enterprise
Now, this is the easier method to disable Cortana.
Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise edition has Local Group Policy Editor, which is basically a tool that works almost like Registry Editor but has been categorized simply to make changes for some feature in Windows 10.
Yes, you probably need to create a System Restore point, too, right before making some changes that could damage your Windows 10 system. This is important if you don’t want to lose anything because of damage that causes you to reinstall Windows 10, for instance.
Now, to remove Cortana, just open Group Policy Editor by pressing Windows+R. Type gpedit.msc and then press Enter.
Just like Registry Editor, you’ll have to go to some address. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search.
There will be an option called Allow Cortana. To turn off Cortana completely and permanently, just double-click it.
Now, you finally can disable Cortana by choosing Disabled. To save changes, just click OK.
That’s it. Now the Cortana has been turned off. Just like before, you have to restart your PC to see the result of the changes you made, and that’s disabling Cortana.
Just like the first method, if you want to use Cortana again, you can enable it by going to Group Policy Editor, and go to the same setting address, and choose Not Configured or Enabled.
