iPhone X series (iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max) has made difference by removing the home button. This leaves problem for many users if their phone get freeze, unresponsive, stuck and force restart is the ultimate solution. Here’s how to force restart iPhone X.
iPhone X is not made perfect, and due to unknown cause (most likely software problems), your iPhone X get freeze and your touch screen can’t be touched.
The only solution to this was force-restarting or hard reset which doesn’t remove your iPhone X data. The good thing about using iPhone is that you use updated iOS that can manage minor problems by force restarting. It is a stable operating system and it has other things like iTunes on your computer to solve the rest of the problems.
iPhone X and others models that doesn’t have Home button uses long-pressed side button as control to open Siri, the virtual assistant you use on your iPhone. Thus method to hard reset changes.
In iPhone 7, you can hard reset or force restart by pressing Home button and side button (normally top) at the same time for at least 10 seconds. Once you see the Apple logo, that means you’ve forced restart the iPhone 7.
In iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XR, and iPhone XS Max, the old method to force restart or hard reset is changed. This leaves confusion for new users who experiences their iPhone freeze for the first time.
Now you might be wondering, how do you force restart an iPhone X?
Well, it is actually easy.
How to Force Restart iPhone X, iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, & iPhone 8
Apple make change to force restart method due to the lack of Home button. Here’s the procedure to force restart iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR:
- Press and quickly release the Volume Up button.
- Press and quickly release the Volume Down button.

Your iPhone X (or other related iPhone model) should restart or boot normally without removing your data. Now that your iPhone X works normally, you can diagnose the cause of the freeze of your iPhone X to prevent further problems and damage.
If You Can’t Force Restart iPhone X
If your iPhone has more problems than getting freeze and can’t boot up after force restart, there’s another solution you can do: reinstall iOS.
iOS can be reinstalled without removing your iPhone’s data by connecting the iPhone to your Mac/PC and use the iTunes apps to do the rest.
Connect the iPhone to your computer using iTunes app. Force restart iPhone XR (or other related iPhone models) but keep pressing the side button after the Apple logo shows up. Keep pressing the side button until recovery mode screen shows up.
Once the recovery mode shows up in your iPhone’s screen (which is the iTunes logo and connector icon), your iTunes app on your PC/Mac will show a dialog box showing you options whether you want to Restore or Update the iPhone.
If you choose Update, your iOS will be reinstalled without removing your iPhone’s data.
If you updating doesn’t fix the problem, choose Restore that unfortunately will reinstall iPhone by removing your iPhone’s data.
